Earth

The Earth is seen as the very form or body of Life, and the heaviest and darkest of the elements. The Earth is our Mother, the source from which we come and to which we must all return, and the source of the food which sustains us. Although we may associate the God with Earth, in his form as Greenman, or the God of the Grain that is reaped or the Stag who must fall, in order to feed the people, primarily the Earth is the Goddess, the female principle, the fertility and substance of Life.
We seek the power of Earth for stability, abundance, growth, perseverance, patience…we respect Her ability, if we are not disciplined in Her path, to shift the sands beneath our feet, or even shake our very foundations. The Elementals associated with Earth are the Gnomes. Other correspondences of Earth include pentacles (as in pentagram, or the suit of pentacles in the Tarot), diamonds (in a common card deck), Winter, north, cold and moist winds, salt, negative (as in battery charge, as differentiated from "bad"), yin, the Ox or Bull (Taurus), Virgo, Capricorn, Venus, Saturn, Ceres, the "earthy" colors: green, russet, brown, black. Most commonly, the color green is used to mark the North Watchtower in Wiccan ritual.
